This season is less focused on Piper and gives more spotlight to the entire cast. I love it because it gives us more chance to truly understand these inmates with new flashbacks coming from Taystee, Lorna, Gloria, Crazy Eyes, Poussey, Rosa and Vee. But my favorite story has to be from Lorna. We get to discover that she's delusional for her make-believe fiancè Christopher and tried to threaten him and her girlfriend before. I can't believe I came with a conclusion of Lorna being a sociopath after that episode. I mean she's really nice and one of the few characters I liked when I was just starting to watch the show. I guess these people are criminals after all. No wonder they ended up on prison.
We also see the rival between Red and veteran inmate Vee. Apparently, these two had a very rough past. Period. It's compelling to see how Vee turned the black inmates (Taystee, Crazy Eyes, Black Cindy, Watson) into atrocious people. Maybe I'm exaggerating but they did became bad people. Now this is where we get to see Poussey outshine this season. Her character struggles to save Taystee from Vee's influence (who happens to be involved with Vee in the past) but Poussey slowly becomes feeble and heartbroken. I really adored Samira Wiley's performance here. I don't want to be detailed about this but you know what I'm saying if you've watched this already.
The last moments of this season were amazing. After seeing flashbacks between the Red and Vee, you'll truly hate the latter as a person instead of a criminal. But kudos for Lorraine Toussaint for making us hate her character so much. Good thing they gave her a "smashing" ending.
Before I get into conclusion, Rosa is the last inmate I want to talk about. Last season, she felt like a stock character. You know, the "woman-with-a-dying-disease-but-doesn't-gives-a-f*ck" type. But during her adventures in her chemo session with that teenage boy, you just can't resist liking Rosa. And she definitely has the most badass backstory above everyone this season. I'm definitely glad she gets to be the hero and had a satisfying closure for her character.
Above all its greatness, of course it has its flaws. But maybe just a few ones. The Larry/Polly story arc felt too much and I hope we get to see less of it next season. And the new inmate Soso was so annoying. It was so unnecessary to add her up with the cast. But still, if she ever returns next season, I'm kinda hoping to see flashbacks of her although I think we already know half of it.
Orange Is The New Black's 2nd season was definitely more fun than last season. More prison craziness. Amazing performances from Poussey, Crazy Eyes, Gloria, and Vee. And the entire ensemble's transformation into three-dimensional characters. I literally cannot wait right now for the 3rd season.
Pros: Lorna and Gloria's backstory, Vee terror, Piper's furlough, Rosa!
Cons: Larry, there were less Alex and Pornstache, it gets dull halfway, and Soso.
Tune in on my next blog as I review the video game Mafia II. Thank you so much for tuning in. Please forgive me if this review itself also had its flaws.
